When asked about her job title, she laughed and said, \u201cWhatever needs to be done, that\u2019s my job title.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0fourth-generation farmer, Calhoun who works alongside her parents, Gerald and Joyce Calhoun, and brother Brad Calhoun, said that during the busy season an average day is between 14 to 15 hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are the first here and the last to leave,\u201d she said, \u201cbut that\u2019s what you do when you own your own business, especially in farming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After graduating from college with a degree in business, Rice\u2019s plans didn\u2019t include returning home to work on the family farm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really didn\u2019t think I would go back,\u201d she said. \u201cI worked in banking for a while and then I was drawn back home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With approximately 300 acres located in\u00a0Turner and Crisp counties, Calhoun Produce was incorporated in 1992 when the current packing house was built. In 1996, peas were added to the farm\u2019s crop inventory that had consisted mostly of butter beans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow our main crops are butter beans and\u00a0u-pick strawberries,\u201d Rice said. \u201cWe grow, shell, and pack the\u00a0butter beans\u00a0fresh here on the farm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Calhoun Produce proudly displays the Georgia Grown label on its peas and butter beans that are available for purchase at the farm\u2019s retail store in Ashburn and the Cordele Farmers Market, as well as stores throughout\u00a0Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur peas and butter beans are for the fresh market,\u201d\u00a0said Rice, who is a member of the Georgia Grown board. \u201cThey are picked, graded, shelled and packaged in one day, and they can be on your dinner plate that night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With an ideal location off Interstate 75, Calhoun Produce is a favorite stop for travelers going to and from\u00a0Florida.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe get a lot of people off the interstate. They plan their trips so they can stop and get their peas and butter beans and other produce,\u201d Rice said. \u201cMany of them have been doing this for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cThe children are not just picking strawberries or walking through a corn maze. We are educating them about where their food comes from and what farming is all about.\u201d &#8212; Shelia Calhoun Rice<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to farming and operating a packing facility, Calhoun Produce has become a popular agritourism site for school field trips and family outings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarvesting and processing the crops takes place from June to October,\u201d Rice said. \u201cIn the spring we are busy with u-pick strawberries. During the fall we have a corn maze.\u00a0We also have \u2018fun on the farm\u2019 with wagon rides, pig races, farm animals, honey bee house and a large playground during the spring and fall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rice said the field trips provide a way of educating local children about the importance of farming. Since the field trips started in 1995, Calhoun Produce has hosted thousands of children, teachers, and parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe children are not just picking strawberries or walking through a corn maze,\u201d Rice\u00a0said. \u201cWe are educating them about where their food comes from and what farming is all about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On certain Saturdays, Calhoun Produce host \u201cFun on the Farm\u201d days, where the entire family can pick strawberries in the spring and early summer. During the fall, visitors can wander through the farm\u2019s\u00a0eight-acre corn maze and enjoy\u00a0wagon rides.<\/p>\n<p>As the agribusiness activities continue to expand, Rice said the next area of growth will be with the Georgia Grown school nutrition program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been working with local schools to show them how they can serve fresh peas and butter beans all year,\u201d said Rice, who recently attended a Georgia Grown event for school nutritionists. \u201cWe cooked some peas and butter beans and gave them a sample.
