It might be a small town, but Adel has lots to discover. Located along Interstate 75 between Valdosta and Tifton, Adel and Cook County is home to Reed Bingham State Park.
Spending the day—even overnight—at Reed Bingham State Park is a must for outdoor lovers. The sprawling state park covers two counties—Cook and Colquitt—and is popular with boaters and skiers. A fishing paradise, Reed Bingham has a 375-acre lake with plenty of bass, crappie, catfish, and bream. Paddlers can rent (or bring their own) canoes and kayaks to explore the lake lined with fragrant water lilies and tupelo trees. Providing ample opportunities for biking and hiking along seven miles of trails. A beach pavilion and picnic shelters make the perfect spot for family outings and group events.
In nearby Cecil, the South Georgia Motor Sports Park draws hundreds of spectators on race days. Considered a premier racing destination, the facility includes a quarter-mile drag strip sanctioned by the NHRA, and an oval track, along with 380 acres for concerts, fairs, and other public events. Take time to visit Downtown Adel, where Matt Griffin, owner of M&E Wingz & Thingz, is serving up his specialty wings from mild and hot to sweet and spicy, along with a dozen flavors. While the wings are popular with the locals, other menu favorites include the crowd-pleasing Philly Cheesesteak and diverse sides.
Before leaving downtown, visit locally-owned shops like Jessie July Clothing Co., Cone Eclectic, and The Mercantile. At the recently renovated River Chic Design, you can purchase a hand-poured dough bowl candle, then step next door for a cup of coffee and a sweet treat at the Dough Bowl Café.
From downtown, head a few blocks south to Sweet T’s Smokehouse for some legendary fall-off-the-bone style smoked meat from chicken to ribs, pulled pork, and more. Don’t forget the Brunswick stew and save room for a slice of homemade dessert.
